President's Message

(July 2022)

Dear Fellow Woodturners:

I hope everyone is doing well, staying safe and cool.

The July meeting was well attended with seventeen members and four guests attending. The demonstration was done by Ralph Rochon on the turning of a live/natural edge bowl. Thanks Ralph for a great demo. Ralph also said that in the near future, he will demo the use of the vacuum chuck system. Thanks also to Lenray Lege for the doughnuts, much enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Steve Nix, the winner of the SWAT symposium scholarship, which is being held in Waco, Texas., August 25 - 28.

The demonstrator for the August meeting will be Dan Whelchel. Dan will demonstrate how to make a pen from a discarded military shell casing. Dan has an interesting story he will share on how the making of the pen came about. Dan said that the demo will not be very long, so this will allow plenty of time for Q&A in conjunction with "Show and Tell". The winner of Gerald Field's beautiful piece, Danny Comb now has the bring back for August. Looking forward to see what Danny comes up with.

Please take note: THE SEPTEMBERR MEETING IS CANCELED, based on the fact that this is the Labor Day weekend and many of the members are attending the SWAT symposium on August 25 - 28, leaving little time to prepare for a September meeting. NO MEETING IN SEPTEMBER.

The President's Challenge will be due at the October meeting; at which time we will draw the winning name for the two free memberships to AWT and the AAW. You must turn in a hollow form to be eligible for the drawing.

The SKEW will be held in conjunction with the October meeting. I will give more information on what we are planning for the SKEW at the August meeting.

It's that time of the year again. In order to prepare for the 2023 election of officers, I will appoint three members to serve on the nomination committee at the October meeting. The election will be held at the November meeting. The committee will return at the November meeting with names of candidates to be placed on the ballot. If you would like to put your name on the ballot, please let the committee know. You will also have the opportunity to do so at the November meeting prior to the election.

I apologize for being a little long winded at times, but some things need to be know by all the members in order to have a great club in which everyone can participate. I welcome any suggestions or comments that you would like to share. I need all the help I can get. In closing, I would like to remind everyone to bring their weed pots/bud vases to the upcoming meeting on August 6, 2022 at 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM if you have not done so. Until we meet again, happy trails.

Monthly Meeting Place: Our regular meeting place, Lewis Services, 510 Saul Dr., Scott, La. 70583
